Top Things to do in Waco this Weekend

The new school year is here! Celebrate all weekend at one of our many back-to-school bashes. But you don’t have to wait for school to start to gain some knowledge. Explore Waco for some fun educational events, including an elephant sized scavenger hunt, drawing lessons, and more.

Through the Weekend

“Into the woods, it’s time to go.” The Waco Civic Theatre presents “Into the Woods, Jr.” with all of your favorite fairy tale characters, including Cinderella who wishes to go to the ball, Jack who wishes for his cow to give milk, and the baker and his wife who wish to have a child. Enjoy the musical by young actors between August 11-14. Showtime at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Matinee on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased here.

Heart of Texas Leather Show comes to the Waco Convention Center from August 12-14. Reception is Thursday from 5:30-10 p.m. with complimentary BBQ ribs, brisket and drinks. Visit the trade show and participate in workshops all weekend. More information and registration can be found here.

Thursday – August 11

Ride the Cameron Park trails with other cyclists at this weekly event. Meet at Bicycle World at 6 p.m. then ride 2 miles to the park where the challenge begins. Ride one to four laps at your own pace, but be prepared for the hills and bring water. Helmets required. Tail lights and headlights are encouraged for the evening ride. RSVP here.


Friday – August 12

Enjoy a four-course dinner from Barnett’s Public House at the Lighthouse Coffee & Wine. Dinner starts at 7 p.m. for $25 per person. This week’s menu includes the chef’s choice of appetizer, a summer house salad or taco soup with goat cheese, choice of beef filet or Mahi-mahi, and red velvet cake to finish with. Reserve for either dine-in, pickup from Barnett’s (starting at 4 p.m.) or local delivery here.

Woodway Family Movie Night presents “Clifford The Big Red Dog”. Enjoy the free movie from 8-10 p.m. at Woodway Lakeside Park. Concessions available.

Saturday – August 13

The Annual Back to School Bash hosted by the Waco Police Department is back at the BASE Extraco Event Center from 8 a.m to 3 p.m. The free event includes games, prizes, dunk a cop, haircuts, and more. Students will receive a free backpack stuffed with supplies (while supplies last). Ascension Providence’s Medical Mission at Home will provide school immunizations, physicals, and other medical services. More information is available here.

Tembo the Elephant presents the Elephant Day Edition of Cameron Park Zoo’s Scavenger Hunt. Learn all about African Elephants as you explore the zoo. It’s $20 per team to participate, which includes one stuffed animal to bring home with you. The hunt runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. More details can be found here.

Express ER presents their Back to School Bash from 10 a.m – 12 p.m. at Express ER on North Valley Mills Dr. Enjoy a bouncy house, a DJ, snow cones, vendors, back pack giveaways and more.

It’s time to celebrate the new school year at Southern Roots Brewing, Co.’s Back to School Bash from 5-8:30 p.m. The first annual event includes pizza and drink specials, a free raffle for local educators, and “Name that Tune” Bingo. Be sure to bring supplies for the school supply drive supporting local school districts.

Dinner Night at the Gallery. Chef Jose brings his food truck, La Parilla, to Waco’s Cultivate 7Twelve for a unique dining experience. Enjoy a four-course meal showcasing the flavors of Puerto Rico with wine and live music as you sit among local artwork. Tickets cost $100 for individuals, $180 for couples.

Sunday – August 14

The monthly live figure drawing class is back at Cultivate 7Twelve from 1-4 p.m. Hope & Harper Art lead the class every second Sunday for $20 per person. BYOB. Must be 18+. RSVP here.

First Woodway Baptist Church hosts their annual Back to School Bash from 2-6 p.m. The free event for students includes food and drinks, haircuts/trims, a water slide, mechanical bull, face painting and more. There will also be free backpacks and school supplies until supplies last.
