The Midway volleyball team has been dominating their competition this season. With a record of 32-2 and a top state and national ranking, these girls are continuing the tradition of athletic excellence for Midway High School. Because of their number one rankings by TGCA and the Max Preps Computer Standings, we are recognizing the team as our Wacoans of the Week.
We had the opportunity to speak with three of the Midway volleyball team’s seniors: Callie Williams, Samantha Sanders and Bianca Convento. These girls, and the five other seniors on the volleyball team, have been playing together for years.
Callie, Samantha and Bianca all agreed that the team’s goal at the beginning of the season was to win a state championship, the ultimate prize of high school volleyball.
“We knew from the very beginning that we were going to be a strong team,” setter Callie said. “Our initial goal was always to win state and go far in the playoffs.”
The girls agreed that their success so far is due to their remarkable team chemistry. Most of the seniors have been playing together in club and on their scholastic team for more than five years. Although Callie was a transfer this year, she noticed immediately that this year’s team was special.
“We work really well together and we’ve been playing really well,” she said. “We immediately got along both on and off the court. We’re friends even outside of volleyball. We are definitely clicking as a team.”
These girls are not only talented as a team — they are talented individuals. Outside hitter Samantha has verbally committed to further her volleyball career at Texas A&M University, and setter Callie has verbally committed to the University of Tennessee. Defensive specialist Bianca has her sights set on earning a Ph.D. after high school. Six total players on the Midway Volleyball team are NCAA Division 1 verbal commits.
You go, girls.
The Pantheretes go into tonight’s match against Copperas Cove as the number one team in the state and in the nation. Their match begins at 5:30 p.m. at Midway High School.
