Happy Labor Day Weekend Waco! While we gather our loved ones this holiday weekend, it’s important to remember why it was created in the first place: to commemorate the achievements and contributions of American workers everywhere. With that said, to all those working here in the USA, happy Labor Day to you! To honor the hard work of Americans here and abroad, don’t just sit around idly and let the holiday pass you by! Make the most of it this weekend by surrounding yourself with friends and family for endless fun. If you’re in need of some inspiration on how to make this weekend special, here are some fun activities to help make your Labor Day great.
Get Your Polka On
The annual Westfest is back for a weekend of fun events. Westfest is a festival held annually during Labor Day weekend to celebrate the Czech heritage of West, Texas. It also raises funds for multiple organizations in the community so while you’re having fun, you’re helping others. Have a blast at the carnival and midway with extreme rides, enjoy live music, devour as many kolaches as you can manage at the kolache eating contest, shop handmade goods at the market, witness the crowning of Miss Westfest, watch the parade go by and don’t miss the polka mass. A full list of events and contests are online and there won’t be a moment without fun.
Indulge Your Sweet Tooth
The annual Labor Day Sorghum Festival at Homestead Heritage is another fun event for the weekend. Here, attendees will have the opportunity to taste homemade sweet sorghum syrup, eat brick oven pizza, ride in horse-drawn hayrides, create handmade crafts and so much more. Experience the pastime craft of creating sorghum and be sure to sample the sweet treat.
Host a tailgate
With college football season starting up, hosting a tailgate is a great way to celebrate Labor Day Weekend. If you’re a fan of the Baylor Bears, come watch as they go up against the Texas State Bobcats this Saturday, Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. Throw on your favorite Baylor jersey, grab a couple of chairs, some coolers and cook up a couple of tailgate favorites to dine on while you watch the big game—such as BBQ sliders, nachos, chicken wings, beer cheese dip and much more. If you need any more recipe inspiration for your next tailgate party, try one of these amazing tailgate recipes found on the Wacoan website. Say Goodbye to Summer
Celebrate summer’s last hurrah at Camp Fimfo. The campground is giving summer the sendoff of the season with a golf cart parade, watermelon eating contest, water limbo, live music, movie night, mixology class and more. Though the heat will stay a little longer here in Waco, the summer season will come to an end and Camp Fimfo is here to make it a great end-of-summer weekend.
Have a Potluck

Brisket Klobasnek from our March 2023 Food & Drink
Fall is on the horizon. This means that outdoor potlucks and backyard gatherings are coming to a close. Make this summer potluck one to remember by inviting your loved ones to gather their favorite dishes to create a summer feast. Encourage your guests to bring their A-game and get creative so that everyone will have a wide variety of foods to pick from. From salads and sandwiches to dips and chips, family recipes and dishes that boast household infamy, potlucks are all about sharing food and community. Craft cocktails using local spirits from Balcones Distillery and get inspiration for your next potluck dish from the Food & Drink section of the Wacoan.
Overall, we here at the Grackle hope that your holiday weekend will be filled with food, fun and family. Have a safe and happy Labor Day.
