The Cove

Ending Youth Homelessness

The Cove is an after-school teen nurturing center for Waco Independent School District high school youth experiencing homelessness. According to WISD Homeless Liaison, Kim Ellis, 335 high school students in WISD met federal definitions of homelessness this year. Nearly half of these students are unaccompanied; they are truly alone. Since its opening in October 2016, The Cove has offered a safe space for students Monday through Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. throughout the school year. Students have access to showers, washers and dryers, a family-style dinner, supportive case management and educational programming. “The Cove has helped a lot,” one 2018 graduate said. “If it wasn’t for The Cove, I probably would have already dropped out. The Cove has been telling me, ‘You can do it.’ Encouragement is exactly what I needed.”
