“My child, rise up!”

Talitha Koum’s brain development program for trauma-affected young children follows the work of Dr. Bruce Perry (M.D., Ph.D.), founder of Child Trauma Academy. From Dr. Perry, Oprah Winfrey learned to quit saying, “What’s wrong with you,” but to quietly wonder, “What happened to you?” The movement from judgement to compassion stems from knowledge. A child living in the toxic stress of deep poverty is likely to enter public school with a brain so broken and disorganized that a strong neural pathway for learning does not exist. Add a hyper-reactive stress response system with its violent outbursts and a child can enter the “school-to-prison pipeline” at the tender age of 4. Talitha Koum’s therapeutic interventions for infants through 4-year-olds include the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics as well as the HighScope® cognitive curriculum. Weekly parenting meetings and a kindergarten-to-college mentoring program round out the care. The weekday, year-round program now offers both in-center and at-home interventions for foster children who have either been adopted or are in the process of being adopted, so that trauma-affected behaviors are relieved within the context of a forever home.
