Changing History. And Her Story.
When Judy Reagan was researching her genealogy, she learned the sad truth that her family had once owned slaves. One was a girl named Julia, who managed to escape her situation when she was 12 years old. Inspired by Julia, Judy wanted to help today’s young people overcome the barriers of a life without education. Judy established the Julia Fund endowed scholarship at the McLennan Community College Foundation last year to provide two years of tuition, fees and mentoring to students of African-American heritage. Each year, six students will have the chance to chase their dreams at MCC. Of this year’s scholars, one is a singer and another a future nurse. Another Julia Fund scholar was the first in his family to earn his degree last May. “Even one day spent in the college classroom changes a person,” Judy said. “It opens up the world.” If you’d like to help change a life story, contact the MCC Foundation to learn more.
