What happens when an elderly widow wants to stay at home but cannot take care of her finances? Seniors and adults with disabilities are too often taken advantage of or they fall victim to financial scams. Sometimes, even with money in the bank, they forget to pay their bills and are evicted or their utilities are turned off. Some never knew how to pay bills like the lady with disabilities who called us and cried, “I slept under a bridge last night. Please help me.” We helped her find a safe place to live by managing her money. Friends for Life’s Money Management Program helps vulnerable people live independently as long as possible, keeping them out of nursing homes and preventing the more restrictive option of guardianship. It’s more critical now than ever. During the pandemic, two money management programs closed leaving a huge need throughout the state. FFL stepped up when Adult Protective Services and the Social Security Administration called and hundreds of new clients have been saved from being homeless, hungry, exploited and abused. Taking on these new clients quadrupled the Friends for Life Money Management Program making it the largest nonprofit Money Management program in Texas. With multiple checks and balances in place and insurance protecting all beneficiaries, Friends for Life is an organizational representative payee for the Social Security Administration making it subject to their most extensive audits. Teachers’ Retirement, the VA and other organizations trust their beneficiaries to Friends for Life as do the courts when they appoint the charity to serve as trustee. Friends for Life helps the elderly and adults with disabilities live the best life possible with adult day care, guardianship, money management, life skills training, independent living, and quality of life programs.
