Care Like Family

Family Health Center (FHC) seeks to improve the wellness of underserved and vulnerable residents of the Heart of Texas by providing effective access to high quality, comprehensive primary healthcare; and by educating tomorrow’s family physicians and health care professionals. Through the Waco Family Medicine Residency Program, FHC trains some of the nation’s most outstanding family physicians with an emphasis on compassion and culturally-sensitive care. FHC was established in 1969 by the McLennan County Medical Society to address a shortage of local doctors, lack of primary care access for low-income community members and economic development issues in Waco. The Center was developed from a coalition of business, political, and medical leaders pulling together to solve these community problems. FHC is a Federally Qualified Health Center providing care to residents of McLennan and Bell counties who have historically struggled in a health care system that favors privately-insured patients. Last year, FHC served 59,435 patients, providing integrated medical, dental, and behavioral health care across 15 clinics. FHC addresses social and environmental barriers to health and wellness through innovative programs and community partnerships. Patients with limited access to a gym can receive a prescription for exercise and have it filled in the Wellness Center at the Madison Cooper Community Clinic. Fitness advisors, Baylor students studying Exercise Physiology, help patients learn how to exercise and create customized exercise plans based on patient goals. Patients who have limited access to healthy foods can receive a prescription for produce and have it filled at FHC; a partnership with World Hunger Relief, Inc. provides fresh vegetables to patients. A Medical-Legal Partnership with Greater Waco Legal Services helps provide access to legal services at low cost to patients. FHC also provides telemedicine services to allow for quicker access to care.
