In the Greater Waco Area, there are over 50 schools serving our children. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, our largest district, Waco Independent School District, has 1,011 teachers on its staff, the second largest school district being Midway Independent School District with 547 teachers. To say the least, Waco has a lot of educators and these numbers do not include surrounding smaller public and private schools. With all the teachers in our area, that’s a lot of people to style and luckily, we’re offering looks that will make you forget about your school spirit wear.
As Waco welcomes winter, there’s harsher winds and cooler temperatures, but just because it’s cold doesn’t mean recess and bus/car duty ceases. Rather than bundling up in the same jacket every day, try going for a colorful puffer vest. This piece of clothing keeps you warm without having to wear a hefty coat. Choosing a white or neutral for the vest will make this piece easier to pair with other sweaters and blouses in your wardrobe.
Speaking of sweaters, there is nothing better than a soft, comfy sweater to get you through the cold dreary days. But comfortable doesn’t mean your outfit has to suffer. Choosing a sweater with bright colors and patterns will make your outfit fun, and a unique neckline such as a turtleneck or with a collared shirt elevates your style. These small details bring so much vibrance to the outfit without much effort. The best part about sweaters is that they go with pretty much any bottom such as jeans, pants, leggings and skirts. A tip I learned from my girlfriends is that you can take any dress you own, attach a belt around the waist, and tuck your sweater underneath the belt — now you have made your dress into a maxi skirt! This is a great way to repurpose those summer dresses that don’t see the light of day until the middle of the year.
Now that we have our foundational outfit, it’s time to accessorize. Since it’s more difficult to pair a necklace with a turtleneck, try focusing your jewelry on bracelets and earrings. Earrings will be most visible when you wear sweaters so grab a basic pair of hoops or use a fun dangled style such as the French 75 earrings. Bracelets are a good accessory to add if you like to cuff the sleeves of your sweaters. Pick a metallic bracelet to match your earrings or mix metals for a bohemian look.
For teachers, their wardrobe is mostly seen by their students, and while they’re not your biggest critic, you should consider wearing what makes you feel best, whether that’s pulling out some sweaters you haven’t worn in a while or adding fun accessories you normally wouldn’t pick. Because when you feel your best, your day is so much better. So instead of instinctively reaching for your school sweatshirt or everyday jacket, move your hand towards the colorful side of your closet.
