Homeschooling has experienced remarkable growth across Texas over the past several years, and the Waco area is no exception. Today, it is estimated that between 500,000 and 750,000 Texas students are educated at home, making Texas one of the most homeschool-friendly states in the nation. With flexible state homeschooling laws and a growing number of educational resources, more families than ever are choosing alternatives.
When I was in high school in the early 2000s, homeschooling and alternative education were rarely discussed. Fast forward to today, and the educational landscape has changed dramatically. Since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, homeschooling has seen unprecedented growth as families seek more flexibility, personalized instruction and greater involvement in their children’s education.
The Waco homeschool community continues to expand each year. One example of this growth is the McLennan Community College Homeschool Resource Fair, which recently welcomed homeschooling families along with dozens of local organizations, curriculum providers and educational vendors. Events like these demonstrate the strength of the homeschool community and the increasing number of resources available to families.
One of the organizations helping connect homeschool families is Greater Waco Christian Home Educators (GWCHE), a nonprofit homeschool support group that provides networking opportunities, field trips, events, sports, graduation ceremonies and educational resources for homeschooling families.
Homeschool Co-ops and Educational Programs
One of the greatest strengths of homeschooling is the sense of community. Homeschool cooperatives, commonly known as co-ops, allow families to work together by sharing teaching responsibilities, organizing field trips, offering enrichment classes and creating opportunities for students to build lasting friendships.

• Alpha & Omega Homeschool Co-op – A Christian homeschool cooperative offering academic classes and enrichment opportunities for multiple grade levels.

• Central Texas Homeschool Theater Club – Nonprofit that gives homeschool students opportunities to participate in theater productions, public speaking and performing arts.
• F3 Co-op – A family-focused cooperative offering enrichment classes, fellowship and educational support.
• Waco Homeschool Chess Club – Organized chess instruction and tournaments for homeschoolers that encourages strategic thinking, competition and social interaction.
• American Heritage Girls – A Christ-centered character development and leadership organization offering badge programs, service projects, camping and outdoor adventures for girls.
• Forest School – An outdoor education model where children learn through exploration, nature study, environmental stewardship and hands-on experiences.
• Wild Sprouts – A nature-based early childhood program that encourages curiosity, creativity and outdoor learning through play and discovery.
Alternative Schools in the Waco Area
Families looking for alternatives to traditional schools also have several outstanding educational options.
Eden Preparatory Academy is a university-model educational program where homeschool students attend classes two days each week, offering a Christ-centered educational environment focused on academic excellence, leadership development and character formation in smaller classroom settings.
Harbor Christian Academy offers education emphasizing on developing students academically, spiritually and socially while maintaining smaller class sizes and strong family partnerships. Hybrid homeschool options are available.
Summit School provides individualized educational opportunities with an emphasis on academic achievement, personal growth and student development in a supportive learning environment.
One Day Academy serves homeschooling families by offering professional classroom instruction one day each week, allowing parents to remain the primary educators while students benefit from experienced teachers and peer interaction.
Valor Preparatory Academy is a PK-12 classical Christian university-model school that combines classroom instruction with at-home learning.
Waco Christian Academy has served Central Texas families for decades, providing a college-preparatory Christian education with strong academics, athletics and fine arts.
