Insider’s Guide to Silobration

By Emily Ober

A celebration of art, music and community

For one special weekend, the Silos transform from a beloved year-round destination into an even livelier celebration, filling Magnolia with performances by internationally recognized musicians, talented artisans from Waco and across Texas, seasonal flavors and family-friendly activities thoughtfully designed to create picture-perfect memories.

One of the most wonderful things about Silobration is that there is always something new to discover. If you have never taken part in the celebration, make this the year — and make a day of it. Explore the little village within our city. Experience this year’s new Western-themed activities, enjoy a concert and take in everything happening throughout the grounds. With family-friendly fun at every turn, Silobration offers more than a day out — it creates the kind of joy you just can’t quite explain.

The secret to Silobration’s success is not simply the big names onstage, the delectable fall menus throughout the grounds or the ever-distant sound of wiffle balls meeting bats. It is Magnolia’s ability to welcome visitors all weekend long without allowing the crowds to dampen the carefully cultivated joy. During Silobration, the festivities spill into the surrounding streets, giving vendors room to spread out and guests even more places to explore, shop and find inspiration. You can also enjoy food-truck favorites in the fall sunshine while taking in a unique view of our picturesque downtown in a
different setting.

Silobration does not transport you to an unforgettable tourist destination so much as it reminds you that Waco already is one. Watching visitors embrace the unhurried pleasure of a fall day in our city reminds us how fortunate we are to relax, unwind and love the place we call home. Plan to stay awhile — because once you arrive at Silobration, you will almost certainly linger longer than you expected.

The Artists of Silobration

Local vendors to support
By Kevin Tankersley

When Silobration kicks off later this month, the Waco art community will be well-represented.

Wendy Michelle Davis will be one of those artists featured at Silobration, which will be October 22–25 at the Magnolia silos, 601 Webster Avenue.

“It’s important to me because I am a Waco artist, and part of what I love to do is to support local artists too,” she said. “I love that they’re wanting to support local artists and local businesses. And I think that is important to Magnolia and to the Gaineses as well.

“I like that it brings so much attention to Waco, because I think Waco is a fantastic town and community. It also gives artists and vendors a place to show their work and be seen.”

This will be the second year that Davis has been part of Silobration. In her 10-foot-by-10-foot space, she said she’ll have available postcards of her art that cost $5, original paintings with prices in the thousands and lots in between.

“I’ll have some calendars, archival prints, so really good quality prints available and I’ll probably do a few framed things too,” she said. “I really enjoy Silobration because I love interior design and it gives me a chance to style my booth a little bit more and make it a little more unique to who I am.”

And she’s a big fan of the artists and others who will also be at Silobration.

“The food vendors are fantastic,” she said. “I have a hard time not spending all my money on all the other vendors that are there because they’re so good. I always bring a budget where I can shop from other vendors because I love supporting other artists and vendors, but it’s a great place to get all your Christmas shopping done and some shopping for yourself.”

Davis has been a fulltime professional artist for six years. She grew up in California, earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English, and has lived and taught English classes in many places, including Abu Dhabi, her last stop before moving to Waco about eight years ago.

“I’ve lived all over,” she said. “I’ve lived in Asia. I’ve lived in the Middle East. I’ve lived in the Pacific Northwest, but Texas is home. I’m not planning on going anywhere. I love it here.”

The list of local vendors alongside Davis at Silobration include Beachy’s Baking Co., By Summer Delashaw, Central Goods, GRACEFULLY Jewelry, Her Table, S.O.S. Cotton Candy and Studio Orch.
