Beat the Summer Heat

Discover indoor activities for a summer of fun

Summer is in full swing and so is the Texas heat! With temperatures already in the upper 90s and climbing, our kids either want to be in the water or in the A/C. Swimming every minute of every day is, unfortunately, not an option, so we have been digging deep to find some indoor spots to explore here in Waco.

While “education-based” activities may not always seem like a party from the get-go, our kids always enjoy perusing the aisles at one of our many libraries or grabbing a treat while we attend story time at Fabled Bookshop & Cafe. Kids college at McLennan Community College also has a ton of learning opportunities for ages ranging 4-17, and they tend to be unique in subject matter. MCC showcases a chance for children to take classes such as Manners for Girls/Boys, Learning STEM with Hot Wheels and Mini Chef Camp. Additionally, our kids have come to realize that just because a building has the word museum in it, doesn’t mean it’s boring. We’ve found that the exhibits at the Mayborn Museum can teach even us moms something, and the make-a-soda experience at the Dr Pepper Museum is a real treat (pun intended)!

Thankfully there are several indoor areas that are specifically geared toward play for a variety of ages. From open play at Little Land to preschool play groups at Texas Dynasty to our newest venue, Play Zone Waco, our littlest kiddos have several spots to escape the heat. Each of these locations provide great fun and an opportunity to connect with other children their age. Older kids are sure not to be left out and can find a good time at Skate Waco, Main Event, Waco Axe Company, Waco Escape Room and Urban Air Trampoline Park. Additionally, one of our favorite finds was blacklight mini golf at Tilt Studio inside of Richland Mall; it provided fun for little ones and big kids alike!

If you’re looking for a more relaxed adventure, we highly recommend Glory Bell Coffee. I know a coffee shop may seem unusual to add to the list, but this place has a designated indoor play area where kids can go bananas — which is every mom’s dream. They also hit the nail on the head with their menu by offering kid-friendly drinks such as apple juice or something on the fancier side, like a Bomb Pop Lemonade. Snacks are available and range from Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies to a chocolate chip cookie — both are sure to be popular with little ones.

We can’t pass up mentioning that Waco is home to three different community centers. Not only are these centers full of activities, they’re also free! Located in East, Central and South Waco, you can find basketball courts, computer rooms, exercise equipment and more available to the whole family. The Woodway Family Center provides a similar reprieve from the high temps with a variety of clinics you can register for, such as Explore Art, Tech Club and even Family Movie Night.

While all the above are great options to keep your toddlers and teens occupied and cool this summer, we know this time of year can often heighten stress levels for parents. You may feel like a cruise director, trying to offer an activity to fill every time block throughout the day. Please know you are doing a great job whether your kid experiences the entire list above or if they sit at home “bored”. There is something to be said about an old-fashioned summer, full of sleeping in, building forts, playing board games and eating one too many ice pops. We think sprinkling in a mix of some of Waco’s finest with your low-key summer plans will help make the perfect summer to remember together!
