Decoding the
Dress Code

Casual chic. Cocktail. Black-tie optional. What do these words mean?

Fall is around the corner, and along with the change of seasons comes the onslaught of invitations to social events. Flipping through the pages of the Wacoan’s Charity & Social Events Datebook may have you wondering what’s appropriate to wear to these social gatherings. Whether it’s an office party, a school event or your favorite charity gala, choosing the proper attire can be overwhelming. We are here to hopefully simplify the process so you can look great and have fun. Remember, investing in the perfect fine jewelry will pull an outfit together and elevate any look. Enjoy your busy social calendar!

If an event calls for casual chic, focus on the “chic.” The casual component should mean great separates like a jacket with interesting detail, a bracelet sleeve paired with a men’s inspired trouser and a feminine top. A favorite pair of flats should make an appearance, too. Beware: You might be tempted to wear your favorite denim — a safe choice — but so will every other woman at the party.

Cocktail attire is for the “after five” events. When you see these words on an invitation, you may think: “I’ll wear my little black dress.” Again, a safe choice, but why not take this opportunity to wear some color? Think: short dress in a jewel tone with a demure and pretty heel. Think: Grace Kelly.

A black tie optional invitation calls for the “modern princess” look. The length should be short, but not too short. The fabric should be special with some shine and sparkle; it should look rich — making you feel regal and beautiful. If you want to bring out your favorite “vintage” dress, update it with textured dark hosiery and a great high heel.
