Makeup artists spill their secrets

Whether you’re looking to reduce fine lines or get that coveted glow, everyone needs a little help in the beauty department. The Wacoan goes behind the scenes with three makeup artists — Linda Arceneaux, Kimberly Cutler and Courtney Yarbrough — who share their secrets to looking your best.

Linda Arceneaux
Licensed laser technician for 13 years, makeup artist for 10 years.

WACOAN: What product do you never leave home without?

Arceneaux: That would be a cross between a lipstick and a sunblock.

WACOAN: What product have you used for years?

Arceneaux: [Smith’s] Rosebud Salve lip balm.

WACOAN: What is your all-time favorite product?

Arceneaux: Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Rose Gold. It’s a multitoned, ultra-fine pigment that adjusts to your natural undertones for a truly unique glow.

WACOAN: What is your go-to makeup tool?

Arceneaux: My blending brush. You cannot blend enough. You should never see contour lines or a difference between your skin and neck.

WACOAN: Do you have any tips for looking flawless in the Texas heat?

Arceneaux: I tell people if they’re wearing [mascara] in the summer, on their lower lashes, to just wear clear mascara. That way you’ll never have the raccoon eyes. You can put the clear over your black mascara or wear it alone.

WACOAN: What lipstick do you recommend for everyday wear?

Arceneaux: MAC matte lipsticks. They’re just beautiful. You can get them from a cool, soothing color to a real pop of a color.

WACOAN: What under-eye product do you use most?

Arceneaux: MAC Pro Longwear Concealer.

WACOAN: What is your must-have skin care product?

Arceneaux: Obagi [Medical Products]. The Obagi system may help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, increase smoothness, correct blemishes and reduce age spots. I use this line on everyone, from adolescents to mature skin. It can be mixed and matched to work on any problem and to reach your goal. It’s like getting your skin fit.

WACOAN: How do you keep your skin looking young and healthy?

Arceneaux: I believe less is more as you get older. You have to change your skin care routine, your products and the amount of makeup you apply. You have to look age appropriate.

WACOAN: Can you take me through your nighttime skin care routine?

Arceneaux: I use a facial wipe to clean my entire face. Then I use my Obagi cleanser, toner, clear and blender [system]. Lastly, I apply almond oil to my upper lash line and Burt’s Bees [lip balm] to my lips.

WACOAN: What else do you do to care for your skin?

Arceneaux: I believe what you eat and drink has a total effect on your skin. Sunblock is a must. Find one that works for you, use it daily and don’t forget your ears and neck.

WACOAN: What makeup items do you use the most?

Arceneaux: Jane Iredale Power of 3 [skin care and makeup system], Morphe eye shadow and blush [Pro Makeup] Pallet, MAC lipsticks, Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector, Cosmedical’s Vita Soothe serum and Jane Iredale D2O.

WACOAN: What is one piece of skin care advice you always tell your clients?

Arceneaux: Allow yourself to age gracefully and to be happy with yourself.

WACOAN: How do you age gracefully?

Arceneaux: Don’t forget yourself in the midst of how busy life is. Make time to get a facial and celebrate yourself. You shouldn’t feel guilty in doing that.

kimblerlyKimberly Cutler
Licensed esthetician and makeup artist for nine years.

WACOAN: What product do you never leave home without?

Cutler: Brow tint. I find when you wear more brow makeup, you can wear less eye shadow.

WACOAN: What is your all-time favorite product?

Cutler: Bronzer. It defines and sculpts the face, giving the skin a little more of a natural glow.

WACOAN: What makeup trends are you seeing?

Cutler: Less is more, 100 percent. Touching the highlighted areas to bring out your own natural features is the trend I’m trying to set.

WACOAN: Do you have any tips for looking flawless in the Texas heat?

Cutler: You want to have a finishing powder as well as a finishing spray. The powder will cut all of the oil, [while] the spray will make it heat- and water-resistant. If you are oily in our humidity, I recommend a mattifying primer.

WACOAN: How do you care for your skin after a workout?

Cutler: I exercise in the mornings, so my skin is already washed from the night before. I go to the gym bare-skinned. I come home, wash with my cleanser and go into my daily routine: vitamin C, Lytera [skin brightener] and a daily sun protection. People who sweat a lot need to cleanse their skin immediately after exercise. If you leave that sweat on the skin, it tends to cause breakouts.

WACOAN: What else do you do to care for your skin?

Cutler: I stay out of the sun. If I am having a pool or lake day, I’ll wear a hat.

WACOAN: What are some good age-preventative treatments?

Cutler: Anti-aging products and a healthy lifestyle: drinking water, staying out of the sun and using good skin care. Aggressive anti-aging treatments aren’t as necessary until you’re a little bit more mature-skinned. Age preventatives for a younger client would be sunscreen and awareness of what sun and tanning beds can do to your skin.

WACOAN: What is one piece of skin care advice you always tell your clients?

Cutler: Protect your skin with an actual sunblock rather than a sunscreen in the makeup. You need to be using a moisturizer with a higher SPF in it, preferably something with UVA and UVB protectant because that will block out all harmful rays.

WACOAN: What do you love about being an esthetician?

Cutler: Being able to watch someone’s skin transform and change the look and feel of their complexion. When you meet a client for the first time and they are having tremendous skin care issues, and you watch them progress over the next six to eight months — to be able to help them is probably the most rewarding. I also enjoy the fragrances, the aromas. And the overall energy of being an esthetician.

courtneyCourtney Yarbrough
Licensed cosmetologist for five years, makeup artist for a year and a half.

WACOAN: What product do you never leave home without?

Yarbrough: My Temptu airbrush machine. I love airbrush because it lasts longer and gives you a really flawless finish.

WACOAN: What product have you used for years?

Yarbrough: I think I’ve had this [MAC] Melba Blush since I was in middle school. It’s my favorite color for blush.

WACOAN: What is your all-time favorite product?

Yarbrough: The Clinique Almost Powder because it gives good coverage without being too much. I use this to set my foundation.

WACOAN: What is your go-to makeup tool?

Yarbrough: The MAC Oval 3 Brush. It is great for contouring your cheekbones or even your nose.

WACOAN: What lipstick do you recommend for everyday wear?

Yarbrough: MAC Finally Free Lipstick. It’s a great mauve color.

WACOAN: Do you have any tips for looking flawless in the Texas heat?

Yarbrough: I recommend setting your makeup with a setting spray. My favorite is from Urban Decay, called the All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray. It helps your makeup last longer.

WACOAN: What makeup trends are you seeing?

Yarbrough: A lot of contouring. The winged lip liner has been a big hit. Whether it’s a red or a dark plum, bold lips have been really popular.

WACOAN: What is your preferred face cleanser?

Yarbrough: Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple One-Step Facial Cleanser. It’s awesome at taking off your makeup. Before I do that, I use Clinique. It’s called [Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm].

WACOAN: What is your must-have skin care product?

Yarbrough: Moisturizer. My favorite is Origins’ A Perfect World. It hydrates your skin to where it’s not too much.

WACOAN: Can you take me through your nighttime skin care routine?

Yarbrough: I start with a cleansing wipe and the Purity One-Step Cleanser. Then I always moisturize with Origins’ A Perfect World.

WACOAN: What else do you do to care for your skin?

Yarbrough: I get facials once a month. That deep cleans your skin and pores. It gets rid of any impurities.

WACOAN: What is the best way to prevent breakouts?

Yarbrough: Washing your face every morning and night. When I have a problem area come up, I use the purifying mud mask by Glamglow [Supermud Clearing Treatment].

WACOAN: How often should you exfoliate your skin?

Yarbrough: Twice a week, depending on the product you’re using. I use [an exfoliating scrub] from the [Philosophy] Purity line called The Microdelivery [Exfoliating Wash].

WACOAN: What makeup items do you use the most?

Yarbrough: The Temptu airbrush machine, the All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray, the MAC blush in Melba, the MAC Oval 3 Brush, the House of Lashes lash [adhesive] and the L’Oréal Voluminous Superstar Eyeliner.

WACOAN: What is one piece of skin care advice you always tell your clients?

Yarbrough: Care for your skin, moisturize and wash your face morning and night.

WACOAN: What do you love about being an esthetician?

Yarbrough: You can take it as far as you want to. I’ve done work anywhere, from photographers to wedding parties to event makeup.
