The Doctor’s Doctor:
Richard B. Kleiman receives Gold-Headed Cane Award
By Brittany Thomas
A highly prestigious banquet honoring this year’s Gold-Headed Cane Award winner was held at Ridgewood Country Club on April 12. Dr. Richard B. Kleiman was named recipient of the Gold-Headed Cane Award for 2008. Kleiman served our community (and his hometown since age 6) for 57 years in the practice of internal medicine in Waco. He retired this past February. p69

Heartbreaking Journey: One couple’s struggle with infertility
by Lisa Asher
Holidays are difficult for Jessica Wash. “It’s hard to be around everyone and have them be so happy,” she said. And this coming Mother’s Day, she added, will be particularly trying. “You just want to stay at home and not be around people who are pregnant.” Jessica is one of the nearly 7.3 million women in the United States who suffer from infertility, commonly defined as an inability to get pregnant after at least one year of trying. The Washes have been involved in infertility treatments for more than two years now, and they are scheduled for yet another treatment in early summer.

  Going Home:
One family’s journey through hospice care
by Kevin Avery
“Do you ever get lost going home from work?” Ronnie Pustejovsky shifted in his chair, still thinking about what the radiologist had asked him. His wife, Delma Sue, recalled his ruddy complexion turning serious before laughing. He told her, “He probably thought I was way older than I am, asking me that.”
In fact, he was only 47. Delma Sue laughed with him. “Probably so,” she said, but she had a sinking feeling there was something more to the headaches than a sinus problem. p82
Transplanting Life: The personal story of a mother’s kidney transplant
by Claire St. Amant
What a difference a year makes. This has become my family’s latest catch-phrase. Exactly one year ago this month, we discovered my mom needed a kidney transplant. Until then, I had no idea what kidneys did. I didn’t know they clean the blood about eight times a day, filtering harmful toxins out of the bloodstream and are connected to the heart and part of the endocrine system, which regulates mood, cell growth and metabolism. The term “vital organ” meant very little to me. p90

The editorial mission of the WACOAN is to present positive images of our community through articles that entertain, enrich and educate. Every issue tells the stories of people, WACOANs, whose personalities, achievements and experiences contribute to our community’s unique character. We take the time to tell the full story — providing all the information that you won’t find anywhere else. We go beyond the news to the human interest that makes up the heart of the Waco community. Bringing you the untold story, the WACOAN picks up where the others leave off. Because WACOAN isn't just the name of our magazine, it's who we are and we take pride in that.
